Spiritual Direction

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is one-to-one conversation with a spiritual guide, in an atmosphere of trust, leading a person into a deeper awareness of and appreciation for God’s presence and movement in daily life. The spiritual direction process helps people who are seeking to live a more fully human, joy-filled life.

Through such companioning, people make their journey to wholeness:

  • From addiction to freedom
  • From loneliness to community
  • From selfishness to service
  • From unrest to peace and joy

“Spiritual direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director -- the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul”.
Thomas Merton

Who is Spiritual Direction for?

If you are seeking to

  • Deepen your relationship with God
  • Live a fuller, more authentic life
  • Have a spiritual companion to accompany you on your journey

What can I Expect in a Spiritual Direction Session?

In spiritual direction one believer accompanies another in the process of growing in intimacy with God.  The focus of a spiritual direction relationship is the experience of the Holy One in the life of the person seeking spiritual direction and the way that communication happens between God and him/her.

The relationship is that of a companion - one who has traveled in desert and oasis places.  The companion can walk with the other in those places and not be frightened by the doubts, pain, and confusion that the person seeking spiritual direction may bring.  The spiritual director as a companion can celebrate another’s growing and healing.

How do I Find a Spiritual Director at Providence Renewal Centre?

Providence Renewal Centre is pleased to be affiliated with a group of professionally trained and experienced spiritual directors.  These spiritual directors make themselves available to provide spiritual direction at Providence Renewal Centre. Click here to see who they are and read their biographies.

Procedure:
Once you have read the short biography of the spiritual directors we encourage you to select up to three people who you feel you may be interested in as a spiritual director.

Next:
Email each of the spiritual directors you have selected and tell them you are looking for a spiritual director and would like to talk with them about this. Your spiritual director will probably initiate conversation about:

  • The nature of spiritual direction
  • The roles of the director and person receiving direction
  • The length and frequency of direction sessions
  • The process for evaluating and terminating the relationship
  • The fee structure for spiritual direction (based on a sliding scale and negotiable)

Retreats and Spiritual Direction

Private Retreats and Silent Directed Retreats, both available at Providence Renewal Centre, are a good opportunity to experience Spiritual Direction.  These short-term stays of a few days to a week are times of silence and prayer - opening oneself more fully to God.  Click here to read more about retreats.

Spiritual Direction and Formation for the Ministry of Spiritual Direction (Presence)

Some people who have the experience of being directed/companioned by a spiritual director for two or more years may feel a call to journey with others as a spiritual director.  We have a formation program for spiritual direction: Presence.  For more information about the Presence program click here.
